The Trend Trap: Why It Didn't Work on You—And What to Wear Instead

You saw it everywhere — on your feed, on a friend, in every store window. You bought it. And somehow, on you, it just didn't do what it was supposed to do.

Nothing was technically wrong with it. Good fabric, the right size, exactly what everyone was wearing. It just sat in your closet, worn twice, then never again — another purchase you can't quite explain, filed under "I don't know, it just didn't feel like me."

Here's what almost nobody tells you: that's not a taste problem. A trend can fail for one of three very specific reasons, and once you know which one, you stop guessing entirely.

Reason One: Wrong Color

A trend can be beautifully cut and still fight your undertone. That rust, that sage, that cool lavender everyone's wearing — it might be gorgeous on the person who posted it and genuinely dull the life out of your own coloring. It's not the color's fault, and it's not yours. It's simply not your color, and no amount of confidence changes what a shade does against your skin.

Reason Two: Wrong Cut

A trend can be the exact right color and still overwhelm your proportions. An oversized silhouette that reads as effortless on one body can swallow another. A trend doesn't know your torso-to-leg ratio or where your natural waist sits — it's cut for an idea of a body, not yours specifically.

Reason Three: Wrong You

A trend can fit and flatter and still feel like a costume. This is the one that's hardest to name: the piece is objectively "right," and you still catch yourself avoiding it, because it doesn't match who you actually are. That's a style identity mismatch, not a fit problem — and it's just as real as the other two.

Where This Quietly Costs You

Trends move fast, and most of us buy in real time — no time to check color, cut, and identity all at once. So we guess, and sometimes we guess right, and sometimes we end up with another piece in the "why did I buy this" pile. This is exactly what quietly drains a closet and a budget: not bad taste, just no system for knowing in advance which of the three things might be working against you.

What I See Every Week

Almost every client who says "I don't know what my style is" actually has a wardrobe full of evidence — pieces that reveal exactly where things go wrong for her, once someone looks at all three factors together. It's rarely just one. Usually a trend fails for a combination: a color that's close but not quite hers, on a cut that's slightly wrong for her proportions, worn in a way that doesn't match how she actually wants to be seen. Once we map all three — her colors, her silhouette, her identity — she doesn't need to guess at the next trend. She can look at something in a store and know, before she buys it, whether it's actually hers.

That's the part an article can't do. I can name the three reasons. I can't tell you which one is working against you without seeing your coloring, your proportions, and your style identity together.

If This Is the Closet You've Been Standing In

It's not that you have bad instincts. It's that no trend was ever built with your specific color, cut, and identity in mind — and until you know all three, every purchase is still a guess.

My Radiance Style Foundation session is ninety minutes and covers all three pillars in one sitting — color, silhouette and proportion, and style identity — so you leave with the complete picture, not just one piece of it. You'll know exactly what to wear instead, before you ever pick it up off the rack.
